Boston Fern (Nephrolepis exaltata)

One of the most popular ferns worldwide. This distinctive fern bears long, graceful, arching fronds of rich green leaflets. Best displayed in hanging baskets and large, decorative containers. Suitable for ferneries or a cool shady spot in the garden. Grow in a shady to partly shaded position in moist, humus-rich soil. Liquid fertilizer during the growing season.

POSITION

Indoors choose a position with filtered light. Always protect from any direct sun (eg behind a sheer curtain). Boston Fern will also enjoy being in a greenhouse or shadehouse in a protected area outside.

TEMPERATURE

Keep them away from direct heat from radiant heaters, hot windows in Summer and freezing windows in Winter, and warm/cool blasts of air from vents or air conditioners, and avoid sudden extreme temperature changes like taking plants from outside to inside or vice versa– use a half way house like a shade house or somewhere protected to gradually accustom them to the change.

WATER

Regular watering, keep soil moist at all time.

NUTRIENTS

In the growth season feed your plant every 2-4 weeks with a dilution of Seasol or worm food by watering can or foliar spray with the brass mister.

HUMIDITY

Some plants like a bit more humidity and the Boston Fern is one. Give them a mist spray every other day and a daily mist spray in super hot weather. Placing your plant on a bed of small pebbles and filling the tray with water up to half way up the pebbles will also create a humid microclimate for plants that love the humidity. Note: Never let the water go over the top of the pebbles; plants hate having their roots sit in water.

PROPAGATION

They can be propagated by division or from spores.

PRUNING

Any major trimming or rejuvenation pruning is best done in spring. They respond well to pruning, giving dense bushy new growth. Boston ferns can grow quite rapidly which is great, except that over time they can become pot bound and this can lead to having to water too often for convenience. If this happens you can simply trim off some of the roots to reduce the size or you can grasp the nettle and repot your fern.

PET FRIENDLINESS

Non-Toxic to Dogs, Non-Toxic to Cats.
