Cordyline (Fruticosa)

Cordylines are one plant group that really compliment the palms and like the low light conditions. They are fantastic foliage plants and can be grown in many areas of Australia, frosts and extreme cold are the main inhibitors.

POSITION

They do best in a brightly-lit, sheltered spot in the garden.

WATER

Water regularly during dry periods. Cordylines are hardy and will tolerate periods of sun although they prefer filtered light.

NUTRIENTS

To make the leaf colour bright, add fertiliser with a high level of potassium, in spring and autumn.

PROPAGATION

Cordylines are easy to propagate. All you do is cut the plant, in three - replant the head and the middle part of the stem in the ground or plant in a pot. The cutting that's left is about 15 centimetres - just push it into a potting mix or some soil and before long there will be three cordylines for the price of one. Just be sure to give them plenty of water in the first 8-12 weeks and avoid exposing them to full sunlight.

PRUNING

Remove dead foliage and cut back in spring if plants become leggy.

PET FRIENDLINESS

This colorful addition to your garden is unfortunately considered toxic to our canine companions.
